SC in the War

South Carolina played a prominent role in the War for Southern Independence. It was the location of internationally historic events, such as the Hunley sinking the USS Housatonic, the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in combat. Numerous battles took place during the war from the opening engagement at Fort Sumter to one of the last raids of the war by Union General Potter - a two week raid through South Carolina that occurred after the surrender at Appomattox. It was the home of some of the most famous confederate Generals from the war including Lt Gen James Longstreet and Lt Gen Wade Hampton. In addition many Confederate army units were formed in South Carolina and many Confederate ships, both naval vessels and privateers, were active in South Carolina waters. There were also numerous fortifications, arsenals, shipyards, and arms manufacturers.
